Development of Safety Standards and supporting documents

As part of its statutory function, the IAEA developes Safety Standards related to decommissioning, and includes:

The IAEA also publishes safety-related documents for each thematic or facility-specific area. These publications, commonly referred to as supporting documents, are designed to complement the Safety Standards.

International Action Plan on Decommissioning

The Action Plan was the result of conclusions and recommendations from the Agency’s International Conference on Decommissioning that was held in Berlin in 2002. The Action Plan was revised in 2007 in accordance with the outcomes of the Athens conference in 2006.

International Projects

The IAEA is committed to assisting Member States in the safe decommissioning of their facilities. At present there are four international projects related to safe decommissioning:

International Decommissioning Network (IDN)

Decommissioning appraisal services

Safety services or appraisals are provided at the request of Member States as a means of applying the IAEA safety standards.

Conventions

The Joint Convention on the Safety of Spent Fuel Management and on the Safety of Radioactive Waste Management is the first legally binding international treaty on safety in the arae of waste management. more

Knowledge sharing and exchange of information

Training and building competence

The education and training provided by the IAEA in the field of decommissioning and waste management is in accordance with the resolutions of its General Conferences and reflects the latest IAEA standards and guidance.
